To maximize the longevity, health, and beauty of your hair extensions, follow these expert do’s and don’ts. Proper care ensures your investment stays seamless, natural, and luxurious.
Do:
- Use moisturizing, hydrating shampoo and conditioner (always paraben- and sulfate-free).
- Brush and detangle at least twice a day with a boar bristle brush, starting at the ends.
- Always apply a thermal heat protectant before styling.
- If you wear hand-tied hair extensions, always fully dry the top of the hair extensions to prevent swelling or damage. Genius weft hair extensions, however, can air-dry naturally without concern. For best results, blow-dry your hair extensions to about 80% dry with your hands before styling.
- Apply extension-safe oil after styling — hair extensions are porous and need hydration.
- Sleep with freshly brushed hair in a loose bun or braid.
- Be mindful of purse straps, backpacks, and luggage pulling on your hair extensions.
Don’t:
- Avoid protein-based products (Olaplex, Moroccan Oil, keratin, or “repair/reconstruct” formulas), which can cause breakage.
- Never use sunscreens with Avobenzone or Oxybenzone — these will turn hair extensions peach permanently - opt for mineral-based sunscreen only.
- If swimming, protect hair extensions with a swim cap or saturate with conditioner or mask beforehand, then wash immediately after. Saltwater and chlorine can discolor hair extensions.
- Don’t use excessive heat on blow dryers or hot tools.
- Never sleep with wet hair — it causes matting, tangles, and damage to hair extensions.
- Avoid purple shampoos and conditioners on hair extensions, which can cause unwanted discoloration.
